The Pick Up Stix Story

The first Pick Up Stix® restaurant was opened in 1989 in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., by Charles Zhang, a Chinese immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in 1982.  His concept called for a quick-casual Chinese restaurant that satisfied American consumers’ demand for fast, high-quality Chinese food that was wok’d fresh (cooked-to-order).  The concept succeeded and today Pick Up Stix is a leader in the quick-casual dining segment with over 100 Pick Up Stix locations in California, Nevada and Arizona.

Zhang developed recipes and sauces using the best traditional Asian food and adapting it to American tastes by reducing the oils and adding wine, vinegar and soy sauce to create more flavorful dishes.  Pick Up Stix continues to prepare food in an open-style kitchen, allowing guests to watch as their meals are cooked to order.

Pick Up Stix’ signature entrée, House Special Chicken, prepared with white wine, garlic and soy sauce, is their most popular dish.  Other entrées include Orange Peel Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Lemon Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Beef and Broccoli.  Sharable appetizers include Cream Cheese Wontons, Asian Lettuce Wraps, California Rolls and traditional Egg Rolls.  Original signature sauces are unique to Pick Up Stix.

Pick Up Stix was recognized by Chain Leader magazine as a “Hot New Concept” in 2001.  The concept continues to receive numerous awards for “Best Chinese Food”, “Best Take Out” and “Best Chinese Restaurant” from periodicals such as the Orange County Register, the Las Vegas Review Journal, and San Diego Magazine.

In July of 2001, Pick Up Stix was acquired by Carlson Restaurants Worldwide Inc., a privately held company owned by Minneapolis-based Carlson Companies Inc., a world leader in the hospitality, travel and marketing industries.  Carlson Restaurants Worldwide operates, owns, franchises and licenses over 800 restaurants in 56 countries including Pick Up Stix, T.G.I. Friday’s®, Friday’s Front Row Sports® Grill and Friday’s American Bar®.

As of August 30, 2006, we are proud to say that there are 124 Pick Up Stix restaurants currently open in the US, with even more new stores planned for the coming year!
